One feature per day. Thirty days. Real projects. Here’s the honest breakdown of what worked, what failed and what I’d never do again.

It started as a personal challenge.
I had been using AI tools casually for a while. Autocomplete here. A quick code suggestion there. Nothing serious. Nothing that actually changed how I worked. And I kept reading posts from people claiming they were shipping faster than ever. Ten times faster. A hundred times faster. Whole startups built by one person in a weekend.
I wanted to know if any of that was real.
So I set a rule. Every single day for 30 days, I had to ship something. Not a draft. Not a prototype sitting on a local branch. Something merged and deployed. A real feature, a real fix or a real improvement that a user could actually touch.
The tools I used were Claude Code for most of the heavy lifting, JetBrains IDE for in-editor work and Junie for the stuff in between. The stack was Laravel for the backend and a mix of Vue and React depending on the project.
Here is what actually happened.
Days 1 to 7: Everything Felt Too Easy
The first week was genuinely exciting. I was shipping small features that normally sat in my backlog for weeks. A bulk export button. A notification preference page. A simple onboarding checklist. Things that were never urgent but always needed.
The tools were fast. I would describe what I needed, review the output and clean it up. Merge. Deploy. Done. Some days I was finishing before lunch.
I started to think maybe the hype was real.
The features in week one had two things in common. They were self-contained and the requirements were obvious. The export button needed to output a CSV. The notification page needed to save user preferences. There was no ambiguity. The scope was small enough that even a rough first pass was easy to clean up.
I did not fully appreciate that at the time.
Days 8 to 14: The First Real Problems Show Up
Week two is when it started getting interesting. By interesting I mean painful.
The features got slightly more complex. I needed to build a usage dashboard that pulled data from multiple tables and displayed it in a way that actually made sense. I needed to extend an existing payment flow to handle a new billing model. I needed to touch code that was three years old and written by three different people.
The tools struggled with context. Not in a dramatic way. More like a slow drift. The generated code would be technically correct on its own but wrong for the actual codebase. It would ignore a pattern we had established everywhere else. It would create a new helper function that we already had. It would write logic that worked but contradicted how the rest of the system handled the same situation.
Every session I had to spend the first ten minutes re-explaining the codebase. The existing conventions. Why we did things a certain way. And even then it would sometimes drift.
Day 11 was the first day I missed my target. I spent six hours trying to get a billing sync feature right and ended up reverting everything and writing it myself.
Days 15 to 21: I Changed How I Was Working
I stopped treating the tools like a junior developer who just needed a task. I started treating them more like a very fast typist who needed an extremely detailed brief.
Before writing a single line of prompt, I would write out the full requirements myself. The data shape. The edge cases. The existing functions it needed to call. The database columns it could touch. I would paste in the relevant existing code so there was no guessing.
It felt like more work upfront. It was. But the output quality improved noticeably.
I also started breaking features into smaller chunks. Instead of saying “build the usage dashboard”, I would say “write a query that returns daily active users grouped by plan type for the last 30 days.” Then I would review that. Then ask for the next piece. The incremental approach was slower per feature but more reliable overall.
Week three I shipped every single day. Most of them were not small features either.
Days 22 to 28: The Fatigue Is Real
No one talks about this part.
After three weeks of this pace, I was tired. Not physically. Mentally. Reviewing code every single day at this volume is exhausting in a specific way. You are not writing from scratch but you are responsible for everything that gets merged. That means you need to understand every line. You cannot just trust the output and move on.
There were days where I caught bugs that would have been genuinely bad in production. A query missing a user scope that would have returned data across accounts. A form that skipped a validation rule we had on every other form in the app. A job that could run in parallel and cause a race condition.
None of these were obvious at first glance. They all required me to actually read the code carefully and think about it in the context of the full system. The tools did not do that for me.
The productivity gains are real but they do not come from doing less thinking. They come from spending less time on the mechanical parts so you can spend more time on the thinking.
Day 29 and 30: Wrapping Up Honestly
I shipped 28 features out of 30 days. Two days I failed completely and had to carry the feature into the next day.
The two failures had one thing in common. Both involved making changes to core parts of the system that had complex side effects I did not fully understand before I started. The tools moved fast and I moved fast with them and we both got it wrong together.
The best days were the ones where I had done the thinking before I opened any tool. The worst days were the ones where I was hoping the tool would do the thinking for me.
What Actually Broke
The assumption that speed equals progress. Shipping fast is only useful if what you ship is right. On the days I moved fastest I introduced the most problems. The tools are fast enough to generate a lot of wrong code quickly.
My review process. I got complacent around day 18. I started skimming. Two of the bugs I mentioned came from that week. I had to go back and fix them quietly and it cost me time I thought I had saved.
My understanding of my own codebase. This sounds strange but it is true. When you write everything yourself you develop a mental map of the whole system. When someone else (or something else) writes large chunks of it, that map gets blurry. I noticed by the end of the month that I had to look things up in my own code more often than usual.
The idea that this replaces experience. The tools are significantly more useful when you already know what good code looks like. When you know what questions to ask. When you can spot the output that looks right but is subtly wrong. If I had tried this challenge two years earlier in my career the results would have been worse.
What I Would Do Differently
Write the spec before you write the prompt. Every time. Even for small features. The act of writing it out forces you to catch the things you had not thought about yet.
Never skip the review because you are tired. That is exactly when you need to do it more carefully.
Use the time you save on mechanical work to think harder about the parts that matter. Architecture. Data integrity. Edge cases. That is where the time should go.
Was It Worth It?
Yes. But not for the reasons I expected going in.
I thought I would come out of it with some magic workflow that made me dramatically more productive every day forever. That is not quite what happened.
What I actually got was a much clearer picture of where these tools are genuinely useful and where they are not. They are great at the mechanical parts. The boilerplate. The repetitive patterns. The first pass at something simple. They are not great at understanding a system they have never seen before. They are not great at catching subtle business logic errors. And they are definitely not great at knowing when they are wrong.
The 30-day challenge did not make me faster every day. It made me smarter about when to reach for the tools and when to just think first.
That might be more valuable in the long run.
